The Miner’s Wife

LYRICS

The Miner’s Wife

By JJ.C., Sydney Mines, C. B.

I have heard a lot of stories
Of the menfolk’s sorry plight;
Their hardships and their struggles,
Their battles and their strife.
Of all the stories I have read,
Or ever heard conversed,
I’ve heard so little of his mate;
For better or for worse.

I am speaking of the miner’s wife;
That girl of many cares;
With her magic gift for figures,
When the play she starts to share.
With a few cents to this one and that
It puzzles one full sore;
To see the way she sends each one;
With smiles, from both her doors.

She finds the time for all her tasks,
And some left over too;
But if she has a large rough flock,
There’s always more to do.
No wonder when she does get sick,
(That happens, it is true;)
Theres nothing ever seem to click,
And all are feeling blue.

From hubby down to youngest babe
She is doctor, wife and nurse;
She never thinks about that line,
For better, or for worse.
For seldom is it better,
When the mine is all one’s life;
Unless one has a better half,
Known as the miner’s wife.

BREAGH MACKINNON – VOCALS & PIANO, COLIN GRANT – VIOLIN

About Breagh MacKinnon

A celebrated young artist on the East Coast scene, Breagh Mackinnon’s voice takes center stage. Backed with her training as a jazz pianist, Mackinnon draws on her love of contemporary folk and pop music to create a sound that is uniquely her own.

Since releasing her ECMA nominated debut album “Where the Days Went” in 2012, Mackinnon has toured the East Coast and has performed at major festivals across the country.  Mackinnon grew up in a musical family on Cape Breton Island, one of Canada’s hidden musical gems. Surrounded by the island’s music community, her interest in the craft of songwriting began at a young age.  “Collaboration has had a major influence on my music.

Playing with artists from different backgrounds inspires me to think outside the box, and co-writing has opened my eyes to a whole new approach to songwriting.”

Since 2011, Mackinnon has made an annual trip to Gordie Sampson’s renowned Songcamp, the birthplace of her album’s opening track “Harbourtown”. In 2013 her song “White Picket Love” earned her the International Finalist spot in NewSong Songwriting Competition and a performance at New York City’s Lincoln Center. 2014 saw Mackinnon travelling to Nashville and Germany with a delegation of Canadian writers to co-write and perform.

For the last couple of years Breagh has been performing  and touring nationally and internationally with her friends Carleton Stone and Dylan  Gouthro  in the band Port Cities.

In the brief period of time since Port Cities unleashed their incendiary debut—a wildly self-assured collection of sparkling, rootsy pop that showcases the Nova Scotia trio’s devotion to songwriting—the band’s been hard at work bringing it to the masses. They’ve continued to explore and evolve their ambitious pop sound, melding diverse musical backgrounds to create an alchemy that’s part art, part songwriting science, and all magic: the nimble dynamism of Breagh MacKinnon’s smoky, jazz-indebted delivery, Dylan Guthro’s simmering and soulful R&B swagger, and Carleton Stone’s razor-sharp, romantic rock ‘n’ roll.
